Meet The Artist Daune Price-Hannah

Hi! This is Daune Price-Hannah (“Daune” is pronounced like “dawn”). I think it is very important to have a face to go with a name.
I'm a wire artist who lives in the Heart of Central Texas with my husband, Rick Hannah, and our numerous pets. As a young child I had such great role models. My mother, at that time was a Home Economics Teacher and she included me in so many projects which introduced me to so many different crafts as she was working. I was so fortunate that she shared her time, for she was so very busy. My father as well let me be involved while he was working to fix what ever needed help. My maternal grandmother, after retiring from teaching, opened her own Arts and Crafts Store in Center, Texas. She also taught a weekly class about different art forms on a local East Texas television cable show. So, early in life I discovered the love and challenge of making anything that I set my mind on. After my junior-community college experience, I went off into the “real” world and worked in numerous positions, all in office settings, but I always was creating something in my off time.
I fell in love in 2007 and married an artist, and then my life changed. With my families encouragement, I decided to go back to school and tap into my creative side. Earned an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Texas State Technical College in Waco, Texas. Wanting to take it a step further, attended the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas, and earned a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with a Minor in Art.
While attending UMHB, I took an Art Metals Class that gave me direction and helped me narrow my focus. This is where I could always be found (if I wasn't in the water-color lab). The final project during my first semester was to complete an art piece of re-purposed items with a main theme incorporating a heart or love. While researching my assignments I was reintroduced to the idea of wrapping and weaving wire, and this set the wheels in motion. Once I graduated and didn't have the everyday access to the art metal lab with all the torches, kilns, and casting elements for silver and bronze, I had to find a way to fulfill the need to create. I was studying at the time to take my Texas State Art Competency Test to become an art teacher and I needed a method of stress reduction. So, while looking around at resources at hand, I started stripping old electrical cord and scrap wire. This started me on the journey of developing my craft. I passed my Art Competency Test--and that was such a blessing--only to find that most of the art teachers had very little time to create due to all paperwork. Because of the strong drive to be able to teach and create I had to find another way to fill this need. I had a need that had to be filled and working with copper wire and teaching through tutorials has been a blessing.
May you find what fulfills your needs!
I hope that you enjoy this journey as we explore the alphabet in wire, one letter at a time. Here's to happy weaving!!
Thank you,
Daune Price-Hannah
